Now, here’s a love story that could actually maul many a dil and haul on many a dimaag.

‘Haul-e-Dil’…oops… Haal-e-Dil is supposed to be the dream launch of producer Kumar Mangat’s doted, somewhat bloated daughter Amita Pathak .

And the other two debutants – Nukuul Mehta and Adhyayan – get a free piggyback on this dream launch in which Mangat seems to have let loose his purse strings for his daughter’s sake.

In a bid to create a magical romantic fable, the writer, and director ( Anil Devgan ) – instead of straining their brains – choose to conveniently lift portions from all the Hindi romantic hits of recent times. No attempt has been made to be different or original (how dare we ask them to), even in the copy-paste endeavour. The result is a collage of usual romantic clichés that have by now become potent substitutes for sleeping pills.

The film tells the story of Sanjana (Amita) who is in love with her rich classmate Rohit (Adhyayan).

Shekhar (Nakuul), a flirt with a constantly roving eye, has a crush on Sanjana on a train ride from Mumbai to Shimla. Like Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge , Sanjana keeps glued to her novel while Shekhar (like Shahrukh Khan ) strums and plucks his guitar as the train to Shimla chugs through what are unmistakably the Alps of Switzerland.

Talk about originality.

Here’s more! Like Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur in Jab We Met , Sanjana and Shekhar miss their train and decide to cover together their remaining journey, which, at one point, inexplicably takes them to the wilderness of a jungle where they encounter a Veerappan-like creature.

As the plot comes out of the woodwork and finds its way back on the track, Shekhar expresses his love and goes on a hunger strike for seven days in front of Sanjana’s house to prove his love. If anything, I say the guy truly has the making of a social activist.

But hey! What about Rohit, the rich, dreamy-eyed guy who is Sanjana’s original love? Expectedly, that’s where the melodrama comes in.

‘Haunt-e-Dil’…oops…‘Haal-e-Dil’ is far, far, far from a dream launch any enterprising producer could have hoped to give his daughter. I feel sorry for Amita – whose performance is comparatively better than her looks – because she is wrongly cast in the role of a dream girl opposite two guys who doubtlessly look younger than her. A girl like Amita would suit character roles, rather than usual heroine stuff.

While Nakuul has the lead role and plays it confidently, Adhyayan seems to have got a raw deal. And yes, he needs to see a good barber, pronto.

And those desperate to catch some sleep need to see this flick, pronto.

Good performances and a few punchy dialogues alone don’t make an interesting rom-com if the plot and direction is lackluster. After all, it takes two to clap. ‘De Taali’ is not an out-and-out comedy. It is a breezy, bouncy, bumbling romantic movie about three friends and a scheming siren. The movie begins with a song (how else).

Paglu (a rightly cast Ritesh Deshmukh ), Abhi (an endearing Aftab Shivdasani ) and Amu (a curvy Ayesha Takia ) are a bunch of slaphappy friends who banter about everything from love, life and sex to marriage. Abhi is a sort of a despo, falling in ‘love’ with any and every girl (be her a kleptomaniac or a witch) who is attractive and then nursing a broken heart after she walks out on him.

In this jamboree of three friends, love sprouts in Amu’s heart. It is love for Abhi. But she doesn’t realize it until Paglu makes her see it.

Before Amu can express her love, a drop-dead-gorgeous Kartika ( Rimi Sen ) enters and sweeps Abhi off his feet. But Kartika is a gold-digger and a smooth operator at that. She has one eye firmly focused on Abhi’s wealth.

As Paglu and Amu try to spoil Kartika’s plans, the movie goes into expected drama – kidnapping, a bunch of rejected lovers, and a twist in the tale.

‘De Taali’ has fine performances from the leading cast, who, at moments, even rise above the mediocre script to hold a viewer’s interest. But director E Niwas disappoints. He seems more fixated on making the movie look visually appealing without ensuring a tight, coherent script in the first place.

The plot inexplicably keeps meandering into ambiguous zones for no rhyme or reason. The twists at the interval and at the end seem contrived to suit the writer’s convenience.

The humour in the film is generic, with a slightly risqué flavour to boot. The songs are okay. In supporting roles Anupam Kher and Pawan Malhotra are made to look like caricatures.

All in all, a ho-hum film with funny moments few and far between.

‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap’ Review: -Timepass comedy

If you don’t know what to do with the next three hours of your life, you can grab a ticket of Mere Baap Pehle Aap to kill your time and get a few chuckles in the bargain.

The movie, by the remake machine called Priyadarshan , is no laugh riot, though that is what the director intended. Even though performances are up to the mark, the script and the dialogues fail to add fizz to the story, a story that had ample scope for tickling any restless spine.

It’s the tale of an authoritarian beta ( Akshaye Khanna ) who bosses his long-widowed father ( Paresh Rawal ) about living away the autumn of his life like a decent old man. But the father, well under the influence of his lusty old friend ( Om Puri ), is inspired to relive his youth again and marry his childhood sweetheart (Shobhana). And even as the son falls in love with a girl ( Genelia D’Souza ) who peeves him perpetually, he is worried more about his father’s marriage than his own.

The movie opens its cards at the very outset when a leery-eyed Om Puri ogles at a bunch of bikini-clad babes to his heart’s content and goes to his best friend Paresh Rawal’s house to convince and inspire him to find a prospective bride for himself. The two geriatrics set out on their hunting mission, only to end up in the clutches of a bullying female cop ( Archana Puran Singh ) who, by bad coincidence, hates nothing in this world more than eve-teasers. Caught between the cop and the blue sea, the two are rescued and reprimanded by Akshaye.

The first half of the film has a number of light-hearted sequences like these. The comedy quotient dips in the second half as the plot gives precedence to melodrama over mirth. The songs are another ear sores even though the camera captures the beauty of Kerala with remarkable finesse.

‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap’ belongs to two players – Akshaye and Paresh Rawal. Though Om Puri adds his own brand of believable lechery, it is Paresh as the meek and timid father who gets a better role and performs likewise. Akshaye seems to go overboard in a few scenes, but overall he does well. Genelia is photogenic and knows how not to ham. Archana Puran Singh is loud, while Rajpal Yadav is wasted. Naseeruddin Shah makes a surprise appearance.

Making a good comedy is no laughing matter, and Priyadarshan – having left his indelible stamp in sitcoms like Hera-Pheri and Malamaal Weekly – knows the ropes very well. But this time he gets tangled and gives us just an average entertainer.

‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap’ is strictly timepass – and make it a long time (close to three hours).

‘Summer of 2007′ -Tiresome
It is prity when noble intentions fail to translate onto the silver screen and only end up as a work of director’s self-indulgence. Such is the case with ‘Summer 2007’, which is based on a pertinent issue, but lacks in conviction and clarity of vision. The fault lies not in the subject, but in its telling.

Starring  Sikander Kher , Gul Panag , Yuvika Chowdhary, Arjan Baweja and Alekh Sanghal, the movie tells the story of five medical students who undergo a rude awakening of sorts when they visit a village in rural Maharashtra.

The quintet, who lived a fun-filled, carefree city life with ‘who cares’ attitude, are forced to look within and do some serious soul searching when they see the appalling conditions in which the villagers live. It’s a bleak place with no medical facilities, where hapless and hopeless farmers commit suicide in the face of government’s apathy and moneylender’s greed.

In such a scenario, the five friends are faced with the tough option – to return to their comfortable lives or to do something for the villagers. But given the rural politics and the influence of those who are opposed to change, the going would certainly not be easy for the five.

‘Summer 2007’ seems like a film made out of angst. But the biggest flaw in the movie is that it doesn’t follow a single course. And this is because the director tries to blend some commercial masala into this otherwise arty endeavor. So, alongside the plight of villagers, we are treated to a developing romance between two lead characters. And let us not forget the songs that stand out like speed breakers on a highway.

The actors turn out to be the main drivers of ‘Summer 2007’. Sikander Kher, who impressed in the forgettable Woodstock Villa , turns up trumps yet again with a restrained performance as a man undergoing inner transformation. Gul Panag shows flashes of brilliance while Yuvika chips in a bit of glamour. Arjan Baweja and Alekh Sanghal play their parts well.

Director Suhail Tatari, however well intentioned he may be, fails to impress you in ‘Summer 2007’. In his endeavor to put in a little bit of everything, the director makes his movie into a time-consuming beast that swells out of his own control in the second half.

you for a second into thinking that he is the bhatakti atmaa of Babban Singh (God forbid) from Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag , but the scary delusion is thankfully dispelled as you notice the wickedly funny streak in the ragged ghost of ‘Bhoothnath’. Yes, the spook makes you smile more than he scares. He also makes you moist eyed – at times a bit more than needed.

‘Bhoothnath’ tells the story of a ghost inside a swanky, neglected, uninhabited house in Goa. The ghost named Kedarnath is in limbo, and he won’t let anyone live inside the house, Nath Villa, to which his fond memories are attached. But then comes a family of Banku (Aman Sidiqqui), his kitchen-shy mom ( Juhi Chawla ) and slap-happy dad ( Shah Rukh Khan ) to live in the house.

The ghost has the plan of scaring the family away. But he runs into the notorious nine-year-old Banku who mistakes the ghost as an angel and befriends him.

Thereby begin the funny antics of Banku and Bhoothnath. With a mere flick of his finger, Bhoothnath is able to do magical feats, and more so willingly at Banku’s command.

The story seems to go in circles as the film focuses on the adventures of the kid and the ghost until Bhoothnath’s past catches up with him. Thereon, the tongue-in-cheek humour of the film wisps out of the plot and melodrama comes in, and the movie becomes a tearjerker, though just partly effective.

‘Bhoothnath’ works mainly in the first half, when it’s funny. Writer-director Vivek Sharma fumbles in the second half, when he obviously feels a necessity to give a definite direction to the plot and veers the story into heavy melodrama reminiscent of films like Baghban .

However, the ever-reliable shoulders of Amitabh Bachchan carry ‘Bhoothnath’ above its deficiencies for the most part. Though there is nothing exceptional about the performance from Big B’s set standards, his charming persona and his comic timing wins you over yet again for the umpteenth time.

Child artist Aman Sidiqqui is no Darsheel Safary but the chubby kid does manage to hold his place opposite the Big B. Juhi Chawla is delightful even when she is over the top. Shah Rukh Khan is good except when he is dramatic and teary-eyed. Priyanshu Chatterjee , as Kedarnath’s estranged son, gets his few moments of acting as well.

Coming from a director who boldly confesses to believing in angels at the movie’s outset, ‘Bhoothnath’ is a film that will particularly appeal to children. The movie’s songs are not distinctly catchy but they are not ear-sores either. The visual effects in the film are of good quality, save for a scene when Banku’s arm keeps stretching out to an unbelievable length to pull his friend out from a well.

If only the film also had such a helping hand to pull it out of the mire of weepy melodrama.

hair and, worst of all, a face devoid of much expression or emotion, Mimoh turns out to be a vain star-son with Bollywood dreams gleaming in his eyes. But dreams alone don’t guarantee fame. It takes a combination of talent, hard work and luck.

Mimoh’s first movie ‘Jimmy’ seems like a film from a bygone era. It is as if the writer found an obsolete script – with a few pages missing, at that – and pepped it up with twists and turns borrowed from more than one source. To add to the proceedings, the director (Raj Sippy) decided to have a number of songs in the film solely to showcase the newcomer’s dancing skills. And voila! A dream launch is ready for Mimoh. Only, it is a launch that doesn’t promise a successful take-off.

The basic problem with ‘Jimmy’ is that its story is so beaten to death that you wonder how could it be used to give birth to a new acting career.

The movie has Mimoh playing an automobile engineer who is so passionate about music and dancing that he works at a night club as a deejay, albeit a Dj who dances more than he handles the discs.

Now, this chubby, innocent-looking fellow gets embroiled in a murder case, and to everyone’s surprise he even accepts that he is the killer.

The confession is obviously a lie. And Jimmy is lying for a reason. But soon he realizes that he is being used as a puppet in a bigger play.

One of the many tragedies of ‘Jimmy’ is that it purports to showcase Mimoh’s dancing skills with songs that hardly sound appealing. However, to be fair, Mimoh’s quite a dancer, but the fact doesn’t stand out because the dances have been choreographed and shot in a way that fails to capture the power or the spirit of the music.

Enough about dancing, now let’s get to something serious.

Acting-wise, Mimoh has a long way to go. You see dedication in his performance, but you don’t see much thought or natural aptitude. His facial expressions are superficial, and his dialogue delivery, his husky, thin voice leaves a lot to be desired. And lastly, he really needs to chisel away fat from his body.

Newcomer Vivana just about manages to get herself noticed, more because of her looks than acting. Zulfi Syed is just about okay. So is Rahul Dev .

That is what happens to Anant Mahadevan’s latest film Anamika. The movie, starring Dino Morea , Minissha Lamba , Koena Mitra , Gulshan Grover and Achint Kaur, has a few deft strokes of a good thriller that are evenly divided throughout the course of the film to keep your interest from waning. But overall, the film fails to engross you because it lacks a credible, convincing development in the plot. The final unraveling does not hit you because you anticipate it well before the climax.

Jia (Minissha Lamba), a part-time escort, falls for the charm of Vikram Sisodiya (Dino Morea) and accepts his proposal of marriage after just a few days of knowing him. Vikram is a widower whose first wife Anamika’s death is still a mystery. Vikram tells Jia about Anamika, but he apparently doesn’t reveal everything.

After romancing around at the picturesque locales of Thailand, the couple arrive at Vikram’s ancestral place, a gloomy palace in Rajasthan under the care of Vikram’s childhood friend Malini (Koena Mitra).

Also on the sidelines is Vikram’s perpetually peeved brother-in-law (Gulshan Grover) who is a cop with an over-suspicious demeanor.

In her new home, Jia is constantly overwhelmed by the talk about ‘Anamika’. So much so that after a while she actually begins to see Anamika in the palace. What’s the mystery? Who killed Anamika? Is Jia’s life in danger as well?

The answers to these questions are not difficult to guess even if you doze off intermittently through the course of the film – which I suspect many people are wont to do.

‘Anamika’ flounders partly because the director ( Anant Mahadevan ) did not ensure a tight script in the first place and partly because there is no convincing motive to the crime. The movie, inspired from the suspense novel ‘Rebecca’, borrows the basic storyline from the book but adds many changes to Indianize the plot.

Minissha Lamba is the only one among actors who grabs your attention with her screen presence. Beautiful she is, but the girl can also act. Her Jia is indecisive, modest, apologetic and yet dreamy eyed. Alongside her Dino Morea manages a fair enough performance playing a suave man with erratic mood swings.

Koena Mitra is expressionless. Her face has a plastic quality that suits a model but not an actor. Gulshan Grover could have done better with some restraint in his performance.

‘Anamika’ works only in patches. The film begins well but loses its steam mid-way. And the climax is a let down.

If you are looking forward to an entertaining weekend, Mr. White Mr. Black is not the answer. The film, attempted as a comedy, turns out to be a somewhat tragic experience for the unsuspecting viewers who walk in the cinema halls expecting some good laughs but walk out with their expressions suggesting they have endured some kind of torture.

To say that the film is a childish, imbecilic comedy would be a gross understatement. With a plot that seems to go nowhere (or everywhere at whim), ‘Mr. White Mr. Black’ throws at you heaps of unimaginable tripe lathered with some beaten-to-death clichés.

The movie begins deceptively. There is a stylish heist of diamonds by a bunch of three shapely, hot girls. Having been caught off guard, you adjust in your seat, bracing up for something sensational to follow. But what you get is a mustachioed Gopi ( Sunil Shetty ) coming from his village Hoshiarpur to Goa to find his brother Kishen ( Arshad Warsi ).

Now, this Kishen is quite a crook. Along with his sidekick, he pulls off petty bluffs on others to make his ends meet. And living to his reputation, he even fools his girlfriend ( Rashmi Nigam ) into thinking that the crook is his twin brother for whose crimes he unduly gets blamed.

While Kishen avoids Gopi as if he has plague, a pretty young thing (Anishka Khosla), who happens to be the daughter of a rich man, falls for Gopi.

As the movie plods through its plot-holes, everyone joins the mad race to get their hands on the diamonds worth Rs 25 crore that actually belong to an unforgiving don (Aashish Vidyarthi).

What ‘Mr. White Mr. Black’ lacks is a good script peppered with witty oneliners. The comedy in the film is mostly a bland mix of slapstick and kitschy moments patched up unintelligibly to make a hodgepodge of a movie. It is not that there are no funny gags, but they are few and far between. On top of it, the film’s plot really goes haywire in the second half with the romantic tracks involving the two heroes and the unwanted songs that only test your patience.

The less written about performances, the better. Arshad Warsi is wasted in a role that seems to have no real comic backbone. Sunil Shetty is not made for comedy. Yet he keeps trying such roles in vain. The two girls, Rashmi Nigam and Anishka Khosla, simper and smile at right moments but don’t show much acting potential. In supporting roles, Aashish Vidyarthi is over the top. Sharat Saxena is somewhat tolerable.

To conclude this review, I have a serious word of caution for those planning to see this film. And heartfelt condolences for those who have already watched it.
